The Tietgen Dormitory was developed and constructed with funding from a Nordic Danish foundation dedicated to pioneering the concept of the “future dormitory” through visionary and clear architectural design. This dormitory houses approximately 400 students and is set to become an international architectural model.

Situated near the University of Copenhagen, in the northern area of Ørestad, the project integrates a flowing canal and building structures in its recent master plan. Its simple circular form harmonizes with the surrounding environment, representing a bold architectural expression within the latest regional development.

▲ General layout plan
The dynamic and sculptural character of the project emerges from the building’s overall form and the spatial arrangement of its functions. The circular design symbolizes equality, community, and individuality. The concept draws inspiration from the fusion of typical public, residential, and dormitory building types.
The dormitory’s cylindrical volume encloses a central courtyard. Private living spaces are arranged along the outer edge on the upper floors, offering views of the surroundings, while public areas face inward toward the courtyard. This inward focus lends the public spaces a vibrant expression. The building’s facade features varying depths, creating a crystalline exterior that highlights each individual residential unit while integrating the substantial impact of the cylindrical form in the urban fabric.

Access to the courtyard is provided through an open passage at ground level, which vertically divides the building into five sections. Each section contains 12 residential units per floor, arranged around shared public spaces and kitchens. All essential support facilities are grouped on the ground floor for convenience.
