EID Architecture Firm has unveiled the design for the “Panda Pavilion,” an extension of the Chengdu International Research and Breeding Center for Giant Pandas. The pavilion features a sweeping, natural form that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding forest landscape. Currently under construction, the project is scheduled for completion in 2022.
This complex consists of four buildings designed to attract visitors worldwide, while providing a comfortable home for pandas and serving as a research facility to study their behavior.

Each exhibition hall is circular with a large outdoor courtyard, providing ample space for pandas to engage in outdoor activities. Inspired by the Chengdu Plain, the design aims to create a natural and organic structure that nestles into the national park’s terrain, resembling a bird’s nest.

The Panda Pavilion represents a fusion of landscape, architecture, and earth art. While offering visitors an enjoyable hiking experience, the design prioritizes animal welfare by creating a habitat that minimizes ecological disruption, explained Ping Jiang, design director at EID Architecture Firm.

The Panda House includes indoor and outdoor activity areas and living quarters for the pandas, administrative offices for staff, and supporting facilities. It also features interactive exhibition and educational spaces for local visitors, along with venues for ongoing research at the breeding center.

The pavilion’s exterior features a vertical wooden facade, with cast-in-place concrete walls beneath. Pressure-treated cedar wood panels on the facade enhance the building’s integration with its natural surroundings. Given the unique needs of the panda residents, sprinkler systems have been installed around the exhibition halls to create a misty environment with optimal temperature and humidity.
