The “Chimelong Theater,” located on Hengqin Island in Zhuhai, China, has recently opened its doors. This new theater replaces the “Chimelong Hengqin International Circus City” building, which was destroyed by a typhoon in 2016. The project was designed by Stufish Entertainment Architects, a firm founded by the late architect Mark Fisher, renowned for his work with BIM (Building Information Modeling). This theater is one of several permanent entertainment spaces the company has designed in China.

Inspired by the original iconic circus building, the design features an undulating curved form reminiscent of tents and stage curtains. The theater’s circular main auditorium accommodates up to 6,700 spectators. The layout is highly efficient, with the entrance located on the ground floor and exits on the top floor. Seating is divided into two sections, separated by a central aisle, while at the top, a track supports scenic elements. In emergencies, the space is enclosed by multiple circular cores, giving the facade pronounced, larger curves.

The entire project is wrapped in a golden facade. Its vertical, rhythmic grid transforms into red and blue hues moving in opposite directions, evoking the vivid and iconic colors of the circus. This vibrant color scheme adds energy and playfulness to the building’s appearance.

Stufish Architects is well-known for its distinctive stage and structural designs. Besides the Chimelong Theater, the firm has designed notable projects such as Wuhan Hanxiu Theater, Nanchang Wanda Shopping Center, and Yunnan Xishuangbanna Custom Theater. Among these, the Nanchang Wanda Shopping Center has become a premier luxury retail and entertainment destination in Nanchang city.
