How to Identify the CAD Version of a DWG File? What should you do if AutoCAD alerts you that your software version is too old when opening a DWG file, and the provider didn’t specify which version was used to create it?
Here are two solutions to help you determine and resolve this issue:
1. Update AutoCAD to the Latest Version
Downloading and installing the newest AutoCAD version usually solves the problem. This is because AutoCAD is backward compatible—newer versions can open DWG files created in older versions, while older software cannot open files created in newer versions.
2. Identify the DWG File Version Manually
You can find out which version of AutoCAD was used to create the DWG file by following these steps:
Method:
1. Right-click the DWG file and select Open with Notepad.
2. Look for a code near the beginning of the file, such as AC1009.
3. Compare this code with the version table below to identify the corresponding AutoCAD version.
Important Notes:
1. Do not modify or save the file when viewing it in Notepad, as any changes can corrupt the DWG file and cause errors.
2. AutoCAD releases DWG versions approximately every three years, which is why certain years like 2011 or 2014 may not appear as official version labels.
