The Suan Kachamudee project is a distinctive and cozy boutique resort located on the east coast of Koh Samui, along Chaweng Beach in Thailand.

Perched halfway up a mountain on a 50% slope, the hotel boasts stunning landscape views, abundant lush vegetation, and numerous solid granite rocks. These natural features presented both challenges and opportunities for the design team.

The designer’s primary concept was to create a striking contrast between the buildings and their natural surroundings. White structures with sharp edges are integrated into the mountain landscape, resting atop the rounded black and gray rocks.

The spacing and orientation of the white blocks were carefully adjusted to minimize visual clutter and protect the existing vegetation. The building’s shell is not designed purely for aesthetics; its form is a result of precise calculations to adapt to local sunlight and climate conditions.

Guests arriving at the reception are greeted by a spa with breathtaking sea views. The pathway from the swimming pool to the main building forms the heart of the resort, where the guest rooms each have private terraces that connect to the central structure.

The entire resort consists of eight guest rooms distributed across five rocky outcrops. It also includes a spa center and a communal living area with an exceptional pool view. The resort’s buildings cover 1,000 square meters on a 2,500 square meter property.

This project was designed by Sicart& Co., based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Smith Architects, a French international design studio responsible for the architectural design (excluding interior design). The project management was handled by 9PM, overseeing construction in collaboration with local contractors. The design phase began in 2013 and the project was completed in early 2015.
