This project celebrates the centennial of Siam Cement Group (SCG), Thailand’s leading building materials manufacturer. Supermachine Studio (BIM Architecture) and two other renowned Thai architects were invited to each design a public facility for the local community. SCG fully sponsored all three projects.
The site is a seaside park located in Bangsaen, a coastal town with a 100-kilometer shoreline. All three projects are situated in the same area: the library by DBALP, the multi-functional venue by DEPT, and the amusement facility by Supermachine Studio.
The design was inspired by the observation that conventional children’s activity spaces mainly encourage kids to be active while adults remain passive observers. This results in parents and children sharing the same space but having an awkward relationship. The challenge was to redesign a space that fosters communication and strengthens family bonds by encouraging parent-child interaction.
Our design features an interlocking concrete maze that offers various exploration paths for both children and adults. This maze provides dozens of route combinations, catering to different family entertainment needs. We view the maze as an activity that encourages parents and children to spend quality time together. The project’s name, “Ten Katas,” refers to the estimated energy expenditure—walking through the maze at a normal pace burns approximately 10 calories.
Located within the green belt adjacent to the existing park, the rotating staircase doubles as a watchtower, offering panoramic views of park activities and the distant sea. The tower’s design allows existing and future greenery to integrate with the structure, gradually camouflaging it with foliage. Visitors can explore the maze while immersed in the natural canopy created by the trees and plants.
