Revit vs. Guanglian Da: What’s the Difference and Which One Should You Choose?

Many friends have asked me: What is the difference between Revit software and Glodon software? Which one is better? There is no definitive answer to this question, as the two serve different purposes and are not directly comparable. Let me share my personal perspective!

1. Different Areas of Specialization

Revit is currently the most widely used BIM software platform. It was developed by AUTODESK, the company also known for the famous design software AutoCAD. Revit was launched in 2000 and is intended for architects, structural engineers, construction contractors, hydro-power engineers, and landscape designers. It allows users to design building appearance, structure, and related objects in three-dimensional space. The software utilizes graphic design elements to develop and interpret models, and provides access to information such as materials, dimensions, and construction methods for building models or component databases. Revit serves as a comprehensive platform, facilitating everything from initial conceptual communication with owners, to production of construction drawings, completion drawings during construction, maintenance, and even demolition.

Glodon specializes in cost and quantity calculation. Its most commonly used module is Graphic Quantity Calculation (GCL), which focuses mainly on civil engineering quantity calculation. Other modules include Steel Bar Quantity Calculation (GGJ) for steel bar estimation, Pricing Software (GBQ) for quota setting after quantity calculation, Install Quantity Calculation (GQI), and Steel Bar Quantity Check (GSS). These tools are generally used for measurement and pricing in civil engineering and hydro-power projects. Glodon’s cost software is recognized both domestically and internationally for its effectiveness in this field.

2. Model Data Performance

Revit model storage is highly advanced, containing not only basic dimensional information for building construction but also personal annotations from modelers. It covers a wide range of professions, is flexible in operation, and delivers realistic visual representations. Revit enables integration and statistical analysis of building model information, allowing modelers to design irregular buildings that meet the unique requirements of modern architectural design. However, because the software is so versatile, it does not offer deep specialization in any one field, requiring modelers to have comprehensive skills.

In contrast, Glodon BIM models offer ordinary visual effects, and some components cannot be represented through modeling. However, Glodon provides manual or atlas input for engineering quantity statistics, enabling in-depth calculations of construction quantities. This feature shortens the learning curve and modeling time for users, greatly improving office efficiency.

3. Bill of Quantities: Data Differences

By comparing the engineering quantities generated by Glodon and Revit, it is evident that Glodon BIM covers building components more comprehensively and conveniently, allowing for calculation and statistical analysis of engineering quantities. While Revit’s detailed tables can be used for summary calculations, there are challenges in preparing certain summary formulas. The quantities produced by Revit are physical quantities and do not always meet China’s quota engineering quantity calculation rules.

Of course, there are many other differences between the two, but due to limited space, I have only discussed the most obvious aspects. That concludes my introduction to the differences between Revit software and Glodon software, and which is better. These are just my personal opinions; if there are any inaccuracies, please do not take action!
