The Baosteel Building in Shanghai is situated in the heart of the Zhuyuan Commercial and Trade Zone, a key area in the eastward expansion of Xiaolujiazui. It benefits from convenient transportation and enjoys a strong reputation.
After two decades of operation, the Baosteel Building faced the need to upgrade its BIM workflow to meet new working methods and the demands of a new generation of users. FTA won the bid and led the renovation design for the architecture, landscape, and interiors, injecting new vitality into the aging structure and supporting Shanghai’s ambition to become a “global city.”
The design approach was grounded in business logic and involved a detailed analysis of the project’s current status. The goal was to treat the building as a product and identify its core value points, ultimately giving the Baosteel Building a refreshed identity for the modern era and boosting its future market value.

The design strategy employs modern colors and materials, adorning the building with a metallic layer featuring copper-colored metal feathers. This metal element symbolizes Baosteel’s renewed vitality and reshapes the building’s business aesthetics. The transformation from heavy steel to a lighter, more agile “steel” represents a shift from conservatism to openness, reflecting Baosteel’s strong innovative spirit.

Through efficient mechanical and electrical space management, the lobby’s height has been increased from 4.2 meters to 4.8 meters, with a corresponding rise in the standard office floor height. This significantly enhances the user’s spatial experience.

For the outdoor landscape renovation, the design team introduced smooth lines and extended the external leisure platform. They broke down the barriers between the original building and the surrounding urban space to create an informal communication atmosphere that enhances the vitality of the office community. Additionally, the design team carried forward consistent design elements, crafting a unified brand identity system for the building.

The renovated Baosteel Building has completely transformed its traditional interior space. It now features a composite layout combining office, shared, and BIM-designed commercial spaces. This creates a more creative, interactive, and open vertical community, enhancing both the building’s core value and its future operational potential.
