Creating a Revit MEP Family Using Inventor
When modeling in Revit, it is often necessary to create complex mechanical and electrical families. However, due to Revit’s inherent limitations, this process is not as straightforward as in dedicated mechanical design software. To overcome this, you can begin by designing the family in Autodesk’s industrial mechanical design software, Inventor. After completing the design, you can directly convert it into a Revit family format, making the modeling process more efficient and convenient.
1. Start by creating the required family in Inventor. Then, navigate to the BIM Content option under the Environment tab, as illustrated below.
2. Next, identify the type of family you are creating. Click on the relevant face to add connectors, as shown in the example.
3. Once the connectors are added, select Export Building Components and save the file in the .RFA format. This file can then be opened directly in Revit. Note that the version of Inventor you use will determine the compatible version of the Revit file, as shown below.
The Importance of These Skills:
By following this workflow, you can leverage Inventor to design complex mechanical families and seamlessly integrate them into Revit. This approach reduces the need to create families solely within Revit, allowing for more flexibility and efficiency based on your project requirements and software expertise.
