This renovation project transforms the original daily teaching classrooms into student accommodation for the 1971 Study Camp. The main goal is to fulfill accommodation needs while preserving the nostalgic memories of the old school.

The Chentuan Town Middle School was originally built by local villagers using local materials and joint funding. Over time, the old buildings could no longer meet modern educational requirements and were replaced by new middle schools, leaving the original facilities abandoned. The project relies on government support to establish a comprehensive youth study and education camp, upgrading the existing building complex to continue serving students.

The original structures mainly featured brick and wood construction, with red brick walls, wooden-framed roofs, and red tile tops. To honor the historical character of the buildings, red bricks were chosen as the primary material for renovation. Traditional masonry techniques were applied to seamlessly integrate the original structures with the new additions, creating a unified building complex.

The entrance to the camp was redesigned by demolishing the original gateway (BIM learning) to create a distinctive landscape entrance. Instead of typical metal lettering, the phrase “1971 Study Camp” is crafted from red bricks, integrating harmoniously with the surrounding space.

The renovation involved reorganizing the original red brick complex, demolishing severely dilapidated small structures while preserving the main buildings.
The preserved architectural spaces were reconfigured into five independent courtyards, connected by a leisure and engaging landscape belt. Red bricks continued to be the primary construction material to maintain spatial coherence. Circular design elements were introduced at each courtyard entrance, enhancing the experiential and playful qualities of the space while respecting the existing building conditions.

The landscape belt connects the elongated green spaces with circles of varying sizes, creating three distinct leisure and interactive areas for BIM engineers: a sunken bonfire gathering spot on the west side, a circular hill path in the center, and a circular maze wall on the east side.

For the indoor renovation, the original wooden roof frame was replaced with a steel structure, raising the ceiling height to improve natural lighting and brighten the accommodation spaces.
