Creating Component Growth Animations with Navisworks: A Step-by-Step Guide

Navisworks can be used alongside Revit software to create animations that visually represent the growth of components. Below, we explain how to use Navisworks to create component growth animations.

1. Open the Model

There are two methods to load Revit models into Navisworks:

1) Open RVT files directly in Navisworks.

2) Export the model from Revit in NWC format first, then open the NWC file in Navisworks, as shown in the image.

2. Activate the Animator Tool

After opening the model, navigate to the Commonly Used tab under Tools. Click to activate the Animator function, as illustrated below.

3. Add a Scene

Click the Add command to create a new scene, or right-click in the blank space above to add a scene, as shown in the figure.

4. Add an Animation Set

Select the desired component, then right-click on the newly created scene and choose Add Animation SetFrom Current Selection, as depicted in the image.

5. Configure the Animation Set

Choose the newly created animation set, check the Active checkbox, and click on Scale Animation Set above. A coordinate axis will appear, where red represents the X-axis, yellow the Y-axis, and blue the Z-axis, as shown.

6. Set Initial Keyframe

Change the value in the Z-axis input box below to 0 and press Enter to confirm. Then click on the Z-axis arrow in the model and drag it down close to zero. Afterwards, click Capture Keyframes above, as illustrated.

7. Set Final Keyframe

Set the timeline to 3 seconds (default unit is seconds) and press Enter to confirm. Then set the Z-axis scale value to 1, and press Enter again. Click Capture Keyframes once more, as shown in the figure.

8. Play and Export the Animation

Select Scene 1, then click the Play button to preview the animation. Next, under the Animation tab, click Export Animation. Set the Source to Current Animator Scene, choose Windows AVI as the output format, define the size and frame rate, and click OK to export the animation, as shown.

Summary: This guide demonstrates how using Revit and Navisworks together to create component growth animations effectively simulates the construction process. It also helps identify and resolve issues encountered during construction.
