As is well known, BIM models offer powerful information storage and processing capabilities, which has led to many domestic projects eager to adopt BIM technology. In recent years, the use of BIM in interior design has also been steadily increasing. Today, I will discuss the benefits and significance of BIM models for interior design.
The level of detail and presentation of BIM models vary between the construction and interior design phases. These levels are often guided by the E202 document published by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), which defines LOD (Level of Development) standards during construction. The LOD is categorized into five levels: LOD100 through LOD500 (Robert, 2011). It is important to note that the letter “D” can refer to both “detail” and “development.” The AIA clarifies that “detail” describes graphical specifics, which may not include non-geometric information, whereas “development” encompasses non-geometric data such as relevant building or material information within the model.
According to BIM application in the construction phase, the basic model and associated information typically require at least LOD350 development detail. However, during the interior design phase, it is essential to clearly present the relevant design and construction drawings that explain construction methods and details before building begins. This clarity is not necessarily tied to the geometric precision of the model. Instead, accurately describing materials and the details of material interfaces is crucial to ensuring the completeness of the interior design.
Therefore, interior designers must provide drawings that reach at least LOD300. Unlike the construction phase, these drawings demand more detailed explanations regarding dimensions, locations, construction methods, and material specifications. After completing the construction drawings, designers usually collaborate with builders or decorators to discuss and clarify manufacturing drawings before handing them over for execution.
Assuming the construction company has already completed the BIM project model, the LOD used in interior design can be seen as a reuse of this original model. The interior design stage does not deepen or alter the original construction model but rather develops a new design phase based on it. This includes creating related materials and detailed explanations tailored for interior design, without increasing the original BIM model’s level of detail. Instead, a new design model is drawn at a different scale specifically for the interior design process.
Through BIM model content, incorporating 3D sectional models and real-time perspective views helps designers verify their design outcomes. It also improves communication efficiency between construction workers and designers, while assisting homeowners in visualizing and experiencing the space. Additionally, since these drawings and models contain material information and construction details, they effectively document every aspect and provide valuable data for future maintenance and upkeep.
