BIM Architecture: Transforming Pujia Primary School and Campus with the Dreamy Blue Playground by Metaphysics + Hangzhou Xiangdi

With the advancement of society and a growing demand for quality activity spaces, teaching methods have evolved from traditional rote learning to more open and interactive approaches. Today’s education requires not only efficient use of space but also an open and inspiring environment that fosters a sense of spatial quality and personal identity for both students and teachers.

Designing a school environment that meets these modern needs has become central to our project.

Hangzhou Pujia Primary School was established in September 1988 through the merger of two schools: Airport Road Primary and Zhanongkou Primary. Airport Road Primary traces its origins back to the late Qing Dynasty as a private school housed in Wenwang Temple. By 1912, it was converted into a public elementary school serving local communities. After the liberation, it was renamed Wenwangmiao Primary School and came under the jurisdiction of Liushuiqiao Primary School’s tutoring area in Xiacheng District.

Pujia Campus is the oldest campus within the Pujia Primary School Education Group, featuring buildings constructed in the 1980s. With over 30 years of history, the campus is an important part of the education group’s heritage. The school aims to revitalize the campus through this renovation.

Pujia Campus has a strong sports tradition. To reflect this, both the school and our design team chose to incorporate sports elements into the playground. The design features vibrant, high-saturation colors along with dynamic lines and geometric shapes applied to both the buildings and sports fields.

This renovation was carried out under a very tight budget and had to be completed over the summer break. To meet these constraints, we adopted a cost-effective renovation strategy that preserved the original building structures entirely. Our updates were limited to adding decorative elements to the exterior.
