Key Considerations for Applying BIM in Cloud Computing Environments

Cloud computing for Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications has become increasingly common in China. I have written related articles before, which interested readers can find linked at the end of this post. Today, I want to discuss key considerations when applying BIM to cloud computing.

1. Focus on Centralizing Information, Not Dispersing It: BIM information models emphasize the full sharing and reuse of data throughout a project’s lifecycle. All stakeholders involved in a project—whether during design, construction, or operation—should contribute to and share BIM data, ensuring its concentration and uniqueness. Cloud computing, utilizing remote desktop and virtual hosting technologies, serves as a powerful means to connect users across time and space, centralizing BIM data in one place. This approach effectively addresses the challenge of managing BIM’s massive datasets without scattering or losing their integrity.

2. Real-Time and Synchronous Information: The BIM model is driven by a “parameter setting engine” within the software, enabling dynamic correlations between engineering data. Changes to one aspect—such as drawing dimensions or quantity estimations—automatically update related information in real time. However, because projects span different locations and schedules, if onsite and office personnel cannot synchronize data immediately or if there is no real-time conversion interface, BIM’s advantages are diminished. Cloud computing acts as the “real-time rain,” enabling all involved parties to operate synchronously on the BIM model throughout the project lifecycle. Such a cloud-based platform for BIM information synchronization could aptly be named SyncBIM.

3. Hardware and Software Demands: As project scale grows, so do the CPU load and graphical performance requirements for BIM models, increasing the demands on users’ software and hardware. If BIM data is distributed across locations and time zones, every project participant needs adequate resources to handle the load, which can become costly. IT maintenance also becomes more complex. In the long run, relying on distributed hardware and software contradicts BIM’s fundamental principle of centralized information management. Although current BIM tools, hardware capabilities, and network bandwidth may not yet fully meet the ideal standards for BIM operation, the trend clearly favors centralization and synchronization. Continuous improvements in these areas suggest that advancing BIM technology towards cloud computing is a natural and necessary evolution.

4. Mobility and Interoperability: One of cloud computing’s greatest strengths is mobility. Imagine that anyone involved in a project can access and view BIM model information simultaneously—whether at the project site, a team meeting, a construction site, or even while on vacation. By simply connecting to the internet and using dedicated interfaces optimized for mobile devices like iPads or tablets (collectively referred to here as “BIM Pads”), users can interact with BIM data anywhere, anytime. Similarly, these devices could be called BIM Phones, BIM Boards, BIM Desktops, or BIM Laptops depending on their form factor. Cloud computing makes working from anywhere possible. Furthermore, BIM models are designed for interoperability, allowing seamless integration across various applications. While interoperability is still evolving, software vendors continue to strive toward perfection in this area.

In conclusion, I hope this discussion on important considerations when applying BIM to cloud computing proves valuable to everyone involved in the field.
