BIM Software Tip: Troubleshooting IFC File Export Issues in Revit
Recently, I worked on a civil engineering model to test data exchange between RVT and IFC formats. During this process, I discovered that IFC files still have some limitations. When exporting IFC files, there are several options for file types. However, I am not completely clear on the differences between them, only knowing that they correspond to various exchange standards. In this case, I used the latest and most widely supported standard, IFC 2×3, for exporting.
Furthermore, when exporting, it is recommended to select ‘None’ for the space boundary option and choose ‘Small Z’ for the “First level.” The IFC file then contains multiple representations of space after linking, including the conventional model.
The test file size was just over 300MB, which is roughly average for most RVT files. The exported IFC file ended up being about 230MB.
The export process took approximately 20 minutes, which is somewhat slow. Based on my observations, if the space boundary option is set to ‘None,’ both the IFC file size and export time should decrease accordingly.
