For those familiar with Building Information Modeling (BIM), Revit often serves as the starting point. Many people are introduced to BIM through Revit, which is considered one of the mainstream BIM software applications widely used in China. Today, I will discuss What is Revit software? What are its advantages?
1. Background of Revit Development
Revit was originally developed by Charles River Software Company, founded on October 31, 1997, in Newton County, Massachusetts, USA. The software was created by Leonid Raiz and Irwin Jungreis, both key developers of Parametric Technology’s Pro/Engineer mechanical design software. In February 2002, Autodesk acquired Revit and announced it as the start of the BIM era. Since then, Revit has actively promoted BIM adoption in the construction industry as a leading force.
2. Revit’s Application Scope
Revit supports hierarchical architectural design methods and applications that are currently among the most widely used in the industry. Additionally, the “Computer-Aided Verification System for Construction Licenses” policy, implemented by the Taipei City Government and the New Taipei City Government, is based on the concept of “Template and Detail Tables” using Revit.
3. Limitations of Revit
Revit is a memory-intensive system that experiences significant slowdowns when project files exceed approximately 300MB. It also has limitations in parameter definitions, supporting only limited complex surface modeling and lacking object-level timestamps. Furthermore, Revit has yet to fully provide comprehensive object management capabilities required in BIM environments.
4. Advantages of Revit
Revit offers two key features: first, a graphical “family editor” that allows users to create parametric components without programming; second, a unified model where relationships among components, views, and annotations are extracted from the same source. This ensures that any changes are automatically propagated, maintaining model consistency. Revit boasts an extensive object library, developed both by Autodesk and third-party developers. Due to its market dominance, it serves as the best platform for direct integration with other BIM tools. Its bi-directional drawing support enables updates and management of information from both surface and model views, including object-oriented and parameterized detail tables, facilitating parallel work on the same project. Additionally, it features an excellent multi-user supported “Object Library (SEEK).”
5. Conclusion on Revit
Revit supports the hierarchical architectural design methods mentioned above. Using Revit as a BIM platform can assist in establishing guidelines for the “Building Information Module (BIM)” throughout a building’s lifecycle. Currently, it remains the most widely used BIM software in the industry, with extensive adoption across domestic enterprises at all levels. Its low cost, ease of use, and wide project adaptability are among Revit’s strongest advantages.
