What Is BIM Software? Key Features and Practical Applications Explained

I have written many articles about BIM software before, and honestly, I didn’t want to write more! However, since many friends have recently asked about this topic, today I’ll discuss it again: What is BIM software? What functions does it offer, and what can it accomplish?

1. Bentley Series Software

Bentley software is widely used in infrastructure applications globally, with greater international adoption and relatively less presence in China. Each year, Bentley hosts the BE (Bentley Infrastructure) Conference, attracting numerous companies and making a significant impact.

The main software categories include:

  • Architecture
  • Structural
  • Building
  • Mechanical Systems
  • Building Electrical Systems

Key Features: Supports DGN and DWG file formats with direct editing capabilities. Models can be published to Google Earth, and SketchUp models can be imported into MicroStation V8 XM Edition. It handles complex geometric surfaces, records editing history to compare changes, and offers management permissions along with digital signature functionality.

2. Tekla Series Software

Tekla is renowned for its expertise in steel reinforcement software, focusing on steel reinforcement modeling and calculation. Its Xsteel software is highly praised in the industry for model detailing. Many steel structure projects in China utilize Tekla software.

Key software modules include:

  • Steel Detailing
  • Concrete Detailing
  • Engineering
  • Construction
  • Management

Key Features: Tracks time and personnel involved in model modifications. Includes built-in 4D (time) management tools and structural analysis functions without the need for additional conversions. It can generate analysis reports on demand.

3. ArchiCAD Series Software

ArchiCAD pioneered the concept of virtual architecture as early as the 1970s and 1980s. Its powerful functions and user-friendly interface have made it a favorite among designers.

Main software components include:

  • ArchiCAD
  • Artlantis Studio
  • EcoDesigner
  • MEP
  • ArchiCAD FM

Key Features: Compatible with MacOS, offering an intuitive interface and a rich object library. It also supports integration with external applications.

4. Digital Project Series Software

Initially developed for aerospace and aviation, Digital Project software focused on the mechanical manufacturing industry during the early BIM adoption phase. More recently, it has expanded into construction, excelling in handling irregular buildings.

Its CATIA software, favored by architect Zaha Hadid, is particularly notable.

Software components include:

  • Viewer
  • Designer
  • Photo Studio
  • Specialized Translators
  • Knowledgeware
  • Imagine & Shape
  • Primavera Integration
  • MEP/Systems Routing

Key Features: Excels at handling complex geometrical surfaces such as curves and irregular shapes. Offers precise and fast presentation of plans, sections, and elevations. Supports VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) programming and can manage large-scale projects efficiently.

5. Revit Series Software

Revit is almost synonymous with BIM in China, thanks to Autodesk’s strong promotion. For those interested in learning more, more detailed information can be found in this introduction to Revit software.

Its software suite includes:

  • Architecture
  • Structure
  • MEP
  • Quantity Takeoff
  • Navisworks
  • Robot Structural
  • Analysis
  • Ecotect Analysis

Key Features: Supports SketchUp file types, is affordable, and easy for beginners to learn. It has abundant learning resources and is well-known within the BIM community. It offers partial clash detection, saving inspection time by focusing only on problematic components and automatically navigating users to those issues.

6. InfraWorks Series Software

InfraWorks is part of the Autodesk family, similar to Revit. In China, AutoCAD and Civil 3D are widely used, with AutoCAD remaining a leading tool for modeling and drafting.

Its software components include:

  • Civil 3D
  • Autodesk ReCap
  • AutoCAD
  • AutoCAD Map 3D

Key Features: Features a low learning curve with simple, intuitive operation. Offers realistic animation simulation with high-quality rendering materials and customizable libraries to enrich models. Acts as a communication and coordination platform, facilitating smooth collaboration between users, designers, and owners through solution selection tools.

That’s all about What is BIM software? What functions are available and what can be done? I hope this article helps everyone better understand these tools!
