4.4 Prefabricated Concrete Exterior Wall Cladding Technology
4.4.1 Technical Overview
Prefabricated concrete exterior wall cladding refers to non-load-bearing concrete panels that are installed onto a building’s main structure for enclosure and decorative purposes. Often abbreviated as exterior wall cladding, these panels come in various types and configurations.
Based on construction methods, exterior wall cladding can be classified into two main types: reinforced concrete cladding and prestressed concrete cladding. Regarding how they connect to the main structure, they are categorized as either point-supported or line-supported connections. Depending on insulation methods, cladding panels can be non-insulated, externally insulated, or sandwich-insulated. From a functional perspective, exterior wall panels serve as either enclosure panels or decorative panels.
These different types of exterior wall cladding can be integrated with insulation, exterior finishes, doors, and windows to create a comprehensive prefabricated wall panel system tailored to project requirements.
Prefabricated concrete exterior wall panels may feature various surface finishes, including brick veneer, stone veneer, colored integral concrete, plain concrete, exposed aggregate concrete, and decorative patterned concrete. These finishes provide buildings with distinctive and appealing exterior appearances.
Produced industrially in factories, prefabricated concrete exterior wall cladding offers advantages such as fast construction, high quality, and low maintenance costs. The technology encompasses design principles for buildings and structures, manufacturing processes of the cladding panels, and installation techniques on-site.
4.4.2 Technical Specifications
The structural components supporting prefabricated concrete exterior wall cladding must provide sufficient strength and stiffness. Typically, civil exterior wall cladding spans only one floor height and one bay, with a minimum thickness of 100 mm and a concrete strength grade of at least C25. Key technical requirements include:
(1) Structural performance must comply with current national standards, including the “Code for Design of Concrete Structures” (GB50010) and the “Code for Acceptance of Construction Quality of Concrete Structures” (GB50204).
(2) Decorative performance should meet standards outlined in the “Code for Quality Acceptance of Building Decoration and Renovation Engineering” (GB50210).
(3) Insulation performance must adhere to design specifications and the industry standard “Energy Saving Design Standard for Civil Buildings” (JGJ26).
(4) Seismic performance must satisfy the “Technical Code for Prefabricated Concrete Structures” (JGJ12014) and the “Technical Standard for Prefabricated Concrete Buildings” (GB/T 51231). Flexible connection nodes are used to link cladding panels to the main structure, allowing for effective adaptation to inter-story displacement during earthquakes. This ensures compliance with seismic resistance requirements in areas with a seismic fortification intensity of 8 degrees.
(5) Fire resistance and combustion performance must conform to the “Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings” (GB50016).
(6) As a building enclosure system, the cladding’s durability should align with the main structure’s lifespan, designed for a minimum of 50 years. Decorative surfaces (excluding coatings) and embedded parts or connectors should also have a design life of at least 50 years. Waterproof materials and coatings should have warranties exceeding 10 years and require routine maintenance and replacement.
(7) Waterproofing performance and related construction must comply with national standards and the relevant provisions outlined in Section 8.6 of the “10 New Technologies”.
4.4.3 Scope of Application
Prefabricated concrete exterior wall panels are suitable for use in the exterior walls of industrial and civil buildings. They are widely applicable to concrete frame structures, steel structures of public buildings, residential complexes, and industrial facilities.
