Is the BIM Exam Difficult? Which BIM Certificate Holds the Most Value?
Although the 13th National BIM Skill Level Examination has concluded and results are yet to be released, many newcomers and professionals alike remain curious about the exam’s difficulty and the value of various BIM certifications. Today, we’ll explore these questions in detail.
Let’s begin with “Is the BIM exam difficult?” This topic has been discussed before, but here’s a concise explanation. The difficulty of the exam largely depends on your foundational knowledge and dedication. For someone new to BIM with little understanding or background, passing the exam without preparation is nearly impossible—except for a few exam prodigies. On the other hand, even if you have some foundational knowledge but don’t practice regularly or apply BIM skills in your daily work, passing the exam can still be challenging.
Therefore, a solid foundation combined with consistent effort is essential to succeed. If you lack a foundation, it’s important to start learning—whether through formal training or self-study. If you’re not naturally diligent, you must push yourself, as studying and certification are not for your boss or parents, but to enhance your own skill set and increase your personal value.
Why emphasize this? The answer is clear when looking at the following image:
This image shows just a fraction of the rewards offered by several companies for passing the BIM certification exams. Many other companies likely have similar or even better policies.
Now, regarding the question of which BIM certificate holds the highest value, I can say with confidence that currently, no BIM certification in China is universally recognized or mandated by national authorities. These certificates are not on the same level as the first-class construction engineer license and don’t even quite match the value of the second-class construction engineer license. However, this doesn’t mean these certificates lack credibility or recognition within the industry.
You might have noticed some hints from the images shared earlier, so I won’t promote specific certificates here. In fact, I have previously written an article titled “A Brief Introduction to the Types of BIM Certificates in China”, providing detailed information about the different BIM certificates, their issuing organizations, and exam schedules. Although that article was published last year and some certificates have since been updated, here is a brief overview of the main BIM certifications available today (in no particular order):
1. National BIM Skill Level Examination
Organized by: Chinese Society of Cartography and the Human Resources Support Department
Certificates offered (three levels): BIM Modeler (Level 1); BIM Senior Modeling Specialist (Level 2); BIM Design Application Modeling Specialist (Level 3)
Exam schedule: June and December annually
2. National BIM Professional Skills Series Job Examination

3. BIM Engineer Certificate (launched this year)

4. National BIM Application Certificate

5. Other Notable Certificates
1. Revit Engineer Certification Exam: Issued by Autodesk, this is considered an entry-level BIM certification.
2. ICM Certificate: Issued by the ICM International Society for Construction Management, this certification has two categories—BIM Engineer and BIM Project Management Director. It is one of the earliest BIM certificates in China but is now relatively rare.
That concludes our discussion on “Is the BIM exam difficult?” and “Which BIM certificate holds the most value?” I hope this article provides useful insights to everyone. I have aimed to present the information as objectively as possible, but please forgive any unintended bias.
