The Revit system family consists of various family types designed to create fundamental building elements within a building model, such as walls, floors, ceilings, and stairs. In addition to these, the system family also encompasses project and system settings. These settings influence the project environment and include elements like elevations, grids, drawings, and viewports.
System families in Revit are predefined and are saved directly within templates and projects. Unlike loadable families, they are not imported from external files. As a result, you cannot create, copy, modify, or delete system families themselves. However, you can duplicate and customize the types within a system family to develop your own unique system family types.
It is important to note that each system family must retain at least one type. While you can delete other system family types, at least one must remain to allow the creation or modification of new system family types.
Although system families cannot be loaded into templates or projects, you have the flexibility to copy and paste system family types, or transfer them between different projects and templates. You may copy individual types or use specific tools to transfer all types within a designated system family.
Additionally, Revit system families can function as hosts for other family types, particularly loadable families. For instance, wall system families serve as the main structure for standard component door and window assemblies.
