There are many BIM application software options available, with around 30 commonly used programs in the market. Previously, we discussed Revit software extensively. Today, let’s focus on an Introduction to BIM Application Software: Bentley and ArchiCAD.
Bentley Systems
Bentley Systems, a company based in the United States, launched Bentley Architecture software in 2004. Bentley Architecture is designed specifically to meet the needs of architects by offering an intuitive user interface, shared 2D/3D tools, and highly automated design assistance. It allows users to freely work in 2D, 3D, or a combination of both, with seamless synchronization and automatic updates between 2D and 3D workflows, significantly enhancing design speed and efficiency.
The software provides a user-friendly interface, powerful professional tools, and a comprehensive library of standard components tailored to architectural requirements. From initial design concepts to detailed construction drawings, Bentley Architecture generates graphical reports reflecting user needs at any stage. It is built on the BIM (Building Information Modeling) concept, utilizing an intelligent 3D building model as a single data source for all inputs and outputs. Every pixel and modification is incorporated into this model, enabling automatic generation and updating of engineering drawings—such as floor plans, sections, and elevations—as well as associated files like quality control documents and valuation reports, all within Bentley’s BIM framework.
Key Features of Bentley Architecture:
- Integration of tools from various disciplines offers broad applications in architectural design.
- Supports complex surface design and provides professional component customization services.
- Allows extensive customization with flexible interface settings and diverse support for operational parameters.
- Dynamic view functions automatically generate 2D drawings and support interactive section view definitions for BIM models.
- Supports importing original digital information from Word, Excel, PDF, SketchUp, AutoCAD, Google Earth, and various image formats into a single file.
- Widely used in many large-scale projects worldwide.
Graphisoft ArchiCAD
ArchiCAD is the flagship product of the Hungarian company Graphisoft, first released in 1980. ArchiCAD focuses on full 3D model design and offers powerful automatic functions such as generating sections, elevations, parameter calculations, and convenient scheme demonstrations with graphic rendering. This provides architects with an exceptional “what you see is what you get” (WYSIWYG) graphic design experience.
ArchiCAD includes PlotMaker, a drawing file editing tool that greatly enhances automation and file management. Intelligent tools ensure that every modification updates automatically across all related files within the drawing set. This saves significant time compared to traditional design software, allowing architects to concentrate more on design rather than manual updates. For design firms, ArchiCAD not only improves design productivity but also helps manage and retrieve design files more efficiently, raising design standards and increasing the value of intellectual property.
ArchiCAD supports comprehensive team collaboration, providing efficient tools for multi-organization and multi-member cooperative design on large-scale projects. Team leaders can assign tasks based on regions, functions, building elements, and other attributes, while team members can complete their work accurately within a shared visual project environment, respecting user permissions. Additionally, ArchiCAD’s 3D models serve as foundational models for architectural design, structural analysis, and more through the IFC standard information exchange platform, ensuring effective multi-disciplinary collaboration within the BIM framework.
Key Features of ArchiCAD:
- Intuitive user interface that is relatively easy to learn and operate.
- Extensive object database.
- Comprehensive application suite supporting construction and facility management.
- Available on both Windows and Mac platforms.
- Large library of parameterized components to support detailed modeling tasks.
- Full support for IFC and commitment to cross-platform interoperability.
