Is the National BIM Level 1 Certificate Effective?
Since March, many people have shown growing interest in the BIM Level Examination. The attention towards BIM technology is rising steadily, which is understandable considering the increasing number of policies introduced by national and local governments to promote BIM. In this article, I will share my personal insights on the matter.
1. Personal Perspective
From a personal standpoint, gaining an additional skill is always beneficial. As the saying goes, having more skills doesn’t weigh you down. BIM technology has become a powerful tool in advancing China’s construction industrialization. Although there isn’t yet a mandatory policy like the one for the first construction project, the introduction of BIM standards and fee guidelines this year suggests a promising future for its development.
Moreover, many construction companies are raising their requirements for practitioners annually, shifting their focus from single-skill technicians to versatile, multi-skilled professionals. In this context, obtaining a certificate or mastering essential BIM skills is crucial—it adds value and credibility in the workplace.
Some argue that the significance of a Level 1 certificate is limited, expressing opinions like “I can use BIM without a certificate.” This is not intended to mock but to acknowledge that lacking certification doesn’t necessarily mean weaker BIM skills. However, when an employer has no prior knowledge of your abilities, a certificate serves as the most reliable proof of your competence. This isn’t about promoting the authority of BIM certificates, but simply emphasizing that having one is better than not having one.
2. Enterprise Perspective
Many companies now specify in their BIM-related bidding processes the required number of BIM skill level certificates among their teams. Thus, BIM certification has officially become a valuable asset for enterprises. While this doesn’t always specifically mean the BIM Level 1 certificate, the number of certified BIM professionals within a company foreshadows its future talent strength.
From an enterprise viewpoint, it’s important to recognize the value of certified BIM professionals. Enterprises that emphasize BIM certification can enhance their workforce’s capabilities and improve their competitive edge. Imagine a company equipped with a strong pool of BIM talent and forward-thinking training programs—it will undoubtedly be more competitive in the future market.
3. Broader Industry Perspective
Since the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development officially approved the “Construction Application Standard for Building Information Modeling” in June last year, BIM has rapidly gained traction across China. The official implementation of this standard on January 1st filled a critical gap in national BIM regulations. As the saying goes, “without rules, there can be no order.” With these standards now in place, BIM’s rise is unstoppable.
According to incomplete statistics, over ten provinces and cities have introduced BIM-related technology policies, and numerous architectural design firms have integrated BIM technology into their projects. The number of BIM-enabled construction projects continues to grow exponentially.
From individuals to enterprises, and across the industry as a whole, BIM’s momentum is undeniable. Regarding the question of Is the National BIM Level 1 Certificate Effective?, everyone will have their own opinions and judgments. However, the overall trend clearly points towards BIM’s increasing importance and recognition.
