The Concept of BIM Technology
With the rapid development of our country and strong government support, related industries and job positions have emerged. One such role is the BIM modeler, a new position within the field of BIM technology. For many people, their first BIM-related job is often as a BIM modeler. Today, I would like to share my understanding of What Do BIM Modelers Do?
1. BIM Modeling
A BIM modeler, as the name implies, is responsible for creating models using BIM software. But this goes beyond simple modeling. The models I refer to are not just the static models many students see in school—they are practical, usable models applied on actual construction sites and capable of cross-disciplinary collaboration. This involves a solid understanding of construction drawings. Additionally, BIM modelers must work closely with relevant stakeholders to respond quickly and make timely adjustments based on project changes.
2. Collaboration Across Disciplines
In my view, a BIM modeler must not only be proficient in their own field but also collaborate effectively with other departments to complete projects. BIM facilitates professional collaboration by breaking away from traditional fragmented CAD drawings. As a result, the role of the modeler has evolved from an individual contributor to a multi-disciplinary team player. BIM modelers can view their own models on the BIM platform and also access models from other disciplines through collaborative platforms. They are responsible for their own models and actively resolve issues arising from the interaction of different trades. This means that BIM modelers are expected to take on increasing responsibilities.
3. Advanced Data Analysis
Thanks to the capabilities of BIM software and technology, BIM modelers can move beyond the limitations of flat CAD drawings and leverage a broader platform for more powerful functions. For example, considerations such as green building and energy consumption analysis—tasks that previously required specialized personnel and software—can now be handled by BIM modelers. They can import their models into relevant BIM software, set parameters, and analyze energy consumption to make timely adjustments that better meet green building standards.
In summary, these are my thoughts on What Do BIM Modelers Do? If any of my views are inaccurate, I welcome your feedback and guidance. I hope this article helps everyone better understand the role of a BIM modeler!
