How Revit Uses View Types to Define Different View Purposes

BIM Software Tip: Revit uses view types to distinguish the purpose of views.

During the project design process, the same view often needs to be duplicated multiple times to serve different purposes. When each view has different regulations or sub-regulations, you can organize them into groups within the Project Browser based on these categories. However, if the parameters across views remain the same, their purpose can only be differentiated by the view name.

For example, consider the first floor plan. There may be three first floor views serving different purposes, but all share the same regulations (Mechanical) and sub-regulations (HVAC). In this case, if there are many views, the Project Browser becomes cluttered and it is difficult to locate the desired view.

So, besides using view names to differentiate purposes, is there another way to group views with the same function?

The answer is yes — by using view types.

First, select one of the views, such as The entire model. Then, click the Edit Type button in the Properties panel to open the Type Properties dialog box.

Within the Type Properties dialog box, click the Copy button to create a new type. Name this new type according to the specific purpose of your view.

After confirming, you will see that the view, for example “Mechanical – Full Model,” has been moved into a separate floor plan category.

Similarly, water system and air system views can each be assigned to their own floor plan categories. This approach helps differentiate views by purpose, making management and searching much easier.

Note: This classification method is not limited to floor plans; it also applies to section views, 3D views, drawing views, legends, and detail schedules.
