Rapid Surface Segmentation with Revit

BIM Software Tip: Rapid Surface Segmentation in REVIT

The image illustrates how to quickly segment a surface so that the lengths of the U-grid and V-grid fall within your desired range and are evenly distributed—without manually specifying the exact arc length.

The process is simple. First, select the volume surface, then click the option in the top right corner to divide the surface.

By default, the system divides the U-grid and V-grid into a fixed number of segments, distributing them evenly across the surface. However, this default grid size may not meet your needs, and since you don’t know the total length of the surface, you can’t directly calculate the number of segments by dividing the total length by your desired segment length.

In reality, you can switch from a fixed segment count to a fixed segment length by changing the distribution method. Simply enter your preferred length value (for example, 2000) in the distance input box.

But what if the grid created this way isn’t perfectly even? Don’t adjust any other settings. Instead, switch the distribution method back from “fixed distance” to “fixed quantity.” You’ll notice that the number of segments changes from the initial default (e.g., 10) to a new value (e.g., 12). This happens because the system automatically calculates how many segments fit evenly within the length range you specified.

The same principle applies to the V-grid segmentation.

This approach allows you to segment the surface without specifying an exact length, ensuring the grid sizes are evenly distributed within your desired length range.
