From a construction standpoint, both methods are acceptable. But how do you decide whether to use Figure 1 or Figure 2 based on the given drawings?
The key lies in the presence of a wall along the side of the 400 × 800 beam, labeled “H.W.” The 1500 × 800 beam on the other side lacks wall support. Therefore, the offset of the 1500 × 800 beam relative to the ramp slope is not in question.
Definitions:
“H.W.” — Hanger Wall: a hanging wall that supports components below.
“B.W.” — Bearing Wall: a load-bearing wall that supports components above.
Here is a simple example applied to stairs:
Because of the hanger wall on the side of the 400 × 800 beam along the slope, the beam is aligned level with the floor plan and an elevation of +3250.
