A Step-by-Step Guide to Adding Skylights to Roofs in Revit

How to Create Skylights on Roofs in Revit

In Revit, window families are typically placed on walls and cannot be positioned on other elements by default. However, by modifying the family category and parameters, you can extend Revit’s family templates to allow window families to be placed on roofs.

Follow these steps to create skylights:

1. Start by creating a new family and choose the Metric Conventional Model Based on Roofs template. Revit provides this default roof model as a starting point.

2. Go to the Create tab, then within the Properties panel, select Family Category and Parameters. In the dialog box that appears, change the family category to Window and click OK to confirm and close the dialog.

After changing the family category, Revit will automatically add parameters such as Height and Width to the window family type.

3. Use the Extrusion and Modify tools to create the window geometry based on your design. Be sure to add the necessary parameters to make the window adjustable and flexible.

4. Finally, load the family into your project. You will now be able to place the window family directly onto the roof.
