BIM Software Tip: Positioning Methods in Revit MEP
Revit offers six different methods for positioning linked files within a project:
1. Auto Center to Center: This method places the center of the imported linked model at the center of the host model. The center is calculated by finding the midpoint of the bounding box surrounding the model in Revit.
2. Auto – Origin to Origin: This method aligns the project origin of the imported linked file with the project origin of the host file. It is generally recommended to use this method when importing files.
3. Auto – By Shared Coordinates: This option places the imported linked model based on the position relative to shared coordinates between the two files. If no shared coordinate system exists, this method will default to “Center to Center.” Note that this option only works with Revit files.
4. Manual Origin: Allows you to manually position the origin of the linked file at a custom location within the host project.
5. Manual Base Point: This method lets you manually position the base point of the linked file at a custom location in the host project. It is only applicable to AutoCAD files that have defined base points.
6. Manual Center: Enables manual placement of the linked file’s model center at a custom location within the host project.
For multi-user, multi-disciplinary workflows, it is recommended to link Revit files using the Auto – Origin to Origin method to ensure consistent and precise placement of each model.
