BIM Software Tip: Revit Face Opening
What does the face opening command target? Let’s experiment by applying the opening command to different elements such as beams, walls, columns, and slabs. You’ll notice that only beams, columns, and slabs respond. So, how can we use surface openings effectively across various components?
First, let’s focus on the beam.
After clicking the face opening command, select the beam where you want the opening—whether on one side or both—to enter the drawing interface.
Once finished, a notification window will appear in the bottom right corner of the drawing interface. This is just a general reminder, so there’s no need to worry about it.
Here is the result:
After completing the beam openings, let’s move on to columns.
The key difference with columns is that openings can only be created on the facade. Therefore, after drawing in the plan view, you need to switch to the facade or relevant working face. For example, select the north facade as shown in the image above.

Drawing openings on floor slabs follows the same process as with beams, so I won’t demonstrate it here.
