BIM Software Tip: Navisworks Project Segmentation
With Autodesk Navisworks, you can activate slicing for your current viewpoint within a 3D workspace. This feature creates a cross-sectional view of the model by cutting through the 3D object, enabling you to examine its interior details. To enable or disable this slicing, simply go to the Viewpoint tab, then to the Splitting panel, and select Enable subdivision. Once activated, the Splitting Tool contextual tab will automatically appear on the ribbon.
Within the Splitting Tool tab, under the Mode section, you will find two splitting options: Flat and Box.
The Flat mode allows you to create up to six sectional planes in any orientation while continuing to navigate the scene freely. This lets you inspect the interior of the model without hiding any elements. By default, these sectional profiles are generated through the center of the currently visible area of the model.
These sectional profiles are saved within the viewpoint itself. This means they can also be incorporated into viewpoint animations or object animations, enabling dynamic visualization of segmented models. For more details about viewpoints and animations, please refer to the Recording and Playing Animation documentation.
The Box mode is designed for focusing on specific, confined areas of the model. When you move the box around, only the geometry inside the defined box will be visible in the Scene View, allowing for a more targeted review of model sections.
