Answering a student’s question about the future directions for practitioners in the BIM industry: What advice would you give to someone new to BIM who is considering their career development?
The path you choose within BIM really depends on your individual strengths and goals. Before deciding, ask yourself: What sets me apart from others? This could be your personality, network, or knowledge base. Then, consider what you truly want—are you focused on immediate results or long-term growth? Are you aiming to earn money now, or to develop your skills and career over time?
Regardless of the path you take, perseverance is key. People who frequently change their minds rarely achieve great success. True persistence means continuing forward despite pressure, challenges, and uncertainty without knowing exactly what the future holds. Without this determination, you are simply waiting.
Once you have chosen a direction, setting clear and simple goals is essential for success. If your goal is to earn money, focus on that. If your goal is growth and development, commit to learning. Giving up halfway, no matter the reason, will lead to failure.
Life is short and motivation can be limited, but the choices available to you are endless. If you keep changing your choices and constantly face setbacks, you risk being defeated over time. Stay strong, stay focused, and keep pushing forward. Let’s encourage each other on this journey!
