Currently, China offers a variety of BIM software solutions, yet the core segment remains dominated by foreign products. When we consider BIM and related software with significant market influence, the following table emerges (domestic software is highlighted in red):
As is well known, BIM core modeling software—also referred to as BIM authoring software—is fundamental to the development and advancement of BIM. Other software tools exchange information with BIM core software at various levels, enhancing the quality and efficiency of work for different project stakeholders using BIM. This collaboration ultimately helps maximize BIM’s value across the entire construction industry. At present, the market for BIM core modeling software in China is virtually undeveloped.
Beyond the absence of BIM core modeling software, eight out of the thirteen categories of BIM and related software listed in the table also lack representation in China. It is important to note that the table only includes software capable of exchanging information with BIM core modeling software. While the content of the table may evolve over time, the overall landscape is unlikely to change significantly in the next two to three years or even longer.
If we all acknowledge that BIM will have a broader and deeper impact on the engineering and construction industry than CAD did in the past, this situation demands serious attention. Industry regulators, academic institutions, research organizations, commercial software companies, and all participants in the engineering construction sector should recognize this challenge and develop appropriate strategies and measures to address it.
