Discussing the Current State of BIM Across Different Industries in China

Today, with some time on my hands, I want to share an overview of the current state of BIM across various industries in China. Since the introduction of 3D parametric architectural design technology in 2003, it has been eight years of gradual development and adoption. As BIM technology has matured, it has finally gained widespread acceptance within the industry.

(1) Owners: An increasing number of both domestic and international owners—including foreign investors, factory owners, and operators of public buildings—have started to impose clear BIM requirements. Some even specify the exact 3D file formats needed. This has raised the entry threshold for projects, pushing the industry to adopt BIM standards.

(2) Designers: Industrial design institutes and large civil engineering design firms, especially those with general contracting qualifications, have successfully implemented 3D design in specific areas. Competition and market demands, particularly during the 2008 Olympic projects, have accelerated technological advancements throughout the design field. BIM is poised to become the next major shift since the 1990s, effectively replacing traditional drawing boards. This second technological revolution in engineering will transform the design industry from basic computer-aided drafting (CAD) to true computer-aided design (CAD) in its fullest sense.

(3) Construction Teams: Several leading construction groups in China have either started or established dedicated BIM teams. These teams focus on 3D detailed design and construction simulation, particularly in civil engineering and mechanical and electrical installations, to support construction management. Such technological progress among downstream contractors is also increasing pressure on designers to adapt and innovate.

(4) Operators: Currently, there are no widespread BIM requirements for operators. The most notable exception is the “Olympic Village Spatial Planning and Material Management Information System” developed for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which remains the only BIM project in China to achieve an operational level.

(5) National BIM Standards: The national BIM standard is gradually taking shape, but it still has a long way to go before practical, widespread application. Meanwhile, various capable industries continue to explore BIM independently and have already achieved partial successes. All stakeholders increasingly recognize the value BIM brings across the entire industry chain.

In summary, today’s overview of BIM’s development across industries in China highlights the progress made and the challenges ahead. I hope this insight resonates with everyone interested in the field.
