Currently, BIM is widely promoted and applied across the construction industry in China. Anyone familiar with BIM technology can list its various functions, though opinions on its capabilities may differ. Today, the editor of BIM Building Training Network will summarize the essential functions that BIM should offer and invite you to join the discussion.
(1) When integrated with 3D Geographic Information Systems (3D GIS), BIM can establish a 3D GIS platform for managing buildings and facilities within areas such as vehicle depots. This involves creating spatial models and detailed data for these structures, developing a sensing system to monitor key parameters, and displaying this information on the platform. Ultimately, BIM-generated 3D GIS results can be delivered to operations departments for effective management.
(2) During construction, BIM facilitates the creation of indoor and outdoor pipeline models, enabling thorough collision checks on 3D pipelines and the submission of comprehensive 3D diagrams showing pipeline nodes. Utilizing BIM for collision detection not only eliminates hard and soft conflicts but also optimizes engineering designs, reduces errors, losses, and rework. Furthermore, construction teams can use the collision-optimized 3D pipeline plans for construction briefings and simulations, significantly improving build quality.
(3) BIM supports 3D virtual construction by combining BIM technology with construction scheduling, simulation, and on-site video monitoring. This integrated approach greatly reduces quality and safety issues while minimizing the need for rework and corrections.
(4) BIM enables digital monitoring of material entry by using barcode technology to record the receipt and usage of key construction materials. This information is displayed in real-time within the BIM system, enhancing transparency and control.
(5) Document management is enhanced through BIM models by linking documents and related components within the BIM environment via manual operations. The system improves search, retrieval, and location functions, all accessible through a four-dimensional BIM visualization interface. This boosts data intuitiveness and material utilization. Upon project completion, a comprehensive information database is automatically generated, providing quick access and positioning for engineering management personnel.
These functions represent just the fundamental capabilities that BIM should provide. We encourage everyone to share their thoughts and comments.
