What Are the Leading BIM Software Solutions Today?

The editor of the BIM Architecture Training Network has received numerous questions from students about the mainstream BIM software currently available. Instead of answering individually, here is a comprehensive summary for your reference.

1. Core BIM Modeling Software: These can be broadly categorized into four main groups:

1) Autodesk’s Revit series (Architecture, Structure, and MEP) has gained significant market share in civil construction, leveraging the strengths of AutoCAD.

2) Bentley’s architecture, structure, and equipment software excels in factory design (petroleum, chemical, power, pharmaceutical industries) and infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, municipal works, water conservancy, etc.).

3) After Nemetschek acquired Graphisoft in 2007, three products—ArchiCAD, Allplan, and Vectorworks—were grouped under the same umbrella. ArchiCAD is the most recognized among domestic users and is a globally oriented product, considered one of the earliest BIM core modeling software with market influence. However, in China, its limited multi-disciplinary support (focused mainly on architecture) makes it challenging to penetrate multi-disciplinary design institutes. Allplan mainly targets German-speaking markets, while Vectorworks is marketed primarily in the US.

4) Dassault’s CATIA is a high-end mechanical design and manufacturing software, dominating sectors such as aviation, aerospace, and automotive. In engineering construction, it offers clear advantages in modeling, visualization, and information management for complex shapes and large-scale buildings compared to traditional construction software. However, it lacks integration with the specific project and personnel characteristics of the construction industry. Digital Project, developed by Gery Technology as a secondary application based on CATIA, adapts it for engineering construction—much like how Tianzheng is based on AutoCAD.

2. BIM Conceptual Design Software: Currently, the main options include Onuma Planning System and Affinity.

3. BIM Structural Analysis Software: Popular software includes ETABS, STAAD, Robot, as well as domestic options like PKPM.

4. BIM Visualization Software: Common visualization tools include 3ds Max, Artlantis, AccuRender, and Lightscape.

5. BIM Model Coordination and Clash Detection Software: Widely used tools for model integration and clash detection include Luban software, Autodesk Navisworks, Bentley ProjectWise Navigator, and Solibri Model Checker.

6. BIM Cost Management Software: Internationally, Innovaya and Solibri lead in BIM cost management, while Luban Software is a prominent player in China.

7. BIM Facility Management Software: Archibus, a US-based operations management software, is one of the most influential solutions on the market.

This concludes the editor’s summary. If you have additions or corrections, please feel free to leave a message.
