When Vietnamese homeowners design and build residential studios, land feng shui often remains a primary concern. In the “Residential+Studio” project, the unique location of the land posed the greatest challenge for NAW Studio. This residential and studio complex sits on a 180 square meter plot on My Thi Street in Da Nang City, facing northeast. The homeowner is particularly worried because the property faces a large church, with a cemetery nearby. This setting introduces many unfavorable factors that impact the family’s daily activities.
Moreover, the homeowner requested that the house design must provide two fully independent living spaces within the same building, each with separate access and facilities, yet allow for easy daily interaction between the two families. This called for creating two complete, self-contained apartments under one roof.
As the name suggests, “Residential+Studio” features a smooth, curved design that flows from the exterior facade into the interior layout. Curved architecture introduces a dynamic sense of movement and continuity throughout the home. These curves not only capture attention but also add visual harmony, playful elegance, and aesthetic appeal to the building.
Beginning with the facade, the curves are carefully proportioned to highlight the building’s unique shape. This design also serves a practical purpose: it blocks direct lines of sight, effectively limiting views of the shrine inside the house and vice versa, which addresses feng shui concerns.
Inside, the striking curves are thoughtfully distributed throughout the house, creating varied perspectives as people move through the space. The building consists of a ground floor plus two upper floors. The first and second floors accommodate the first apartment, while the third floor functions as a second independent unit.
Vertical circulation is divided into two main axes: the first apartment occupies the first and second floors, and a front staircase runs through all three floors, serving as the main entrance to the second apartment.
Both apartments are fully equipped with essential living spaces including living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, studios, and auxiliary rooms, meeting the family’s comprehensive needs. The interior color palette primarily features white, gray, and wood tones, emphasizing simplicity and functional design while reflecting the homeowner’s personality.
An important aspect of NAW Studio’s design approach is managing the internal microclimate. For “Residential+Studio,” they implemented a “Wind Catcher” system—a well-established architectural solution that remains highly effective in the hot, sunny climate of central Vietnam.
At first glance, the exterior facade looks quite enclosed, reflecting the homeowner’s desire for privacy. However, behind this appearance, a system of horizontal windproof louvers allows fresh air to enter the home. This is achieved through pressure differences created by a large vertical skylight situated at the center of the house.
The wind flows through every corner of the interior, exhausting through the skylight to create continuous air circulation that keeps the house cool. NAW Studio also strategically places green plants near ventilation openings to enhance indoor air quality and contribute a natural touch to the environment.
