The Kanzhai concrete villa is thoughtfully designed within a forested residential area in Mudanya, Bursa, on the site of an old family home. Throughout construction, great care was taken to protect the surrounding trees and vegetation, integrating them into the overall landscape and making nature an intrinsic part of the home. Residents describe Can House as a place where the natural harmony shaped by the terrain blends seamlessly with human life, creating a serene and tranquil environment.

PIN Architecture Firm employs a multidisciplinary team of engineers, contractors, landscape architects, and architects to craft structures with a distinctive expressive language. This villa, combining concrete and glass, was sculpted with precision by a master of concrete and formwork. Their expertise ensures the design harmonizes with both the building and its natural surroundings. This collaborative approach prioritizes creating high-quality spaces deeply connected to their environment.

The house design embraces sustainable development principles, aiming for minimal environmental impact. Existing trees were preserved during construction, and the walls feature double layers with insulation and moisture barriers. Energy-saving strategies were implemented, including the use of eco-certified materials, minimal decorative elements, and climate-optimized lighting and infrastructure. The swimming pool operates without chemicals, hazardous waste is responsibly managed, and renewable energy sources are incorporated. These efforts underscore the project’s dedication to sustainability.

The house features a U-shaped layout across three levels that follow the natural slope of the terrain. It faces the forest to the north and the distant Uluda Mountains to the south. The central living area stretches east to west, with glass exterior walls on both the north and south sides, flooding the space with natural light. Residents affectionately call it the “house through which the forest flows.” Three beech trees between the south terrace and the pool symbolize the “heart” in Turkish mythology, representing the south courtyard and inspiring the house’s name. The term “Kalpgah” means “center of life,” relating to the heart and chest, which is reflected in the name “Can House.”

This design highlights the dynamic interplay of sunlight throughout the year, creating vibrant lighting effects indoors and outdoors. The building’s biophilic features—such as plants, the surrounding forest, and natural materials—enhance residents’ sensory and emotional experience. Interiors are finished with materials, colors, and textures that harmonize with the residents’ blend of medieval and modern furniture, reflecting their refined taste. Sunlight is deliberately used as a design element, shaping the atmosphere and strengthening the connection between space and its users.
