The editor of the BIM Architecture Training Network often receives the same question from students: Which software should a BIM beginner learn? Here are some personal insights for your reference.
First and foremost, as a BIM beginner, it’s important to start by understanding the fundamental concepts of BIM. Explore resources like the internet, books, and other materials to answer questions such as: What is BIM? What can it do? How does it work? Avoid rushing into learning software tools without a solid grasp of these basics. Software skills are specialized, and learning them blindly without a clear understanding of BIM will only turn you into a modeling machine, limiting your ability to bring creative ideas into your designs.
Secondly, keep in mind that there is a wide variety of BIM software available. Your choice should align with your field of expertise or specific job responsibilities to maximize your efficiency. For example, if you work with curtain walls, software like CATIA or Rhinoceros might be more appropriate. If your focus is building design, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or drainage systems, then mastering Revit would be more beneficial. Selecting the right BIM software is crucial for beginners, and it should be based on your actual needs. Avoid trying to learn too many software programs at once—a common pitfall for beginners. It’s challenging enough to master one or two BIM tools that suit your work well. Spreading yourself too thin can hinder your progress and development.
Finally, maintaining a patient and steady mindset is essential, as with any learning process. Once you reach a certain skill level, it’s natural to feel confident, but be careful not to become complacent. BIM software evolves rapidly, so staying humble and open to continual learning is key. Remember, there will always be experts with deeper knowledge and skills, especially in a country like China where BIM usage is widespread. Avoid letting small achievements lead to overconfidence—this is a common mindset challenge for BIM beginners.
That’s all for today. Keep learning and gaining experience—you’ll improve with time and dedication.
