Challenges in Implementing BIM Successfully

Although BIM technology is rapidly advancing in China, there are still significant challenges hindering its widespread implementation. Today, the editor of BIM Building Training Network will discuss four major obstacles.

Lack of Leadership Support and Recognition. The foundational work of construction enterprises and BIM software vendors is not yet strong enough to capture the attention of decision-makers. This has become a key barrier to the broader adoption of BIM technology. This issue is especially pronounced in state-owned enterprises, where frequent leadership turnover significantly dampens enthusiasm for embracing BIM.

Absence of Clear Entry Points. Despite BIM’s considerable value, the software itself is not mature enough to provide effective entry points for practical application, making it difficult for enterprises to integrate BIM smoothly into their workflows.

High Entry Barriers. The initial investment required for BIM technology, the technical expertise needed, and the shortage of skilled professionals pose major challenges that construction companies cannot overcome quickly. Additionally, BIM implementation in projects carries risks, particularly those related to human factors such as team collaboration. Project failures can result in substantial financial losses, which discourages both construction firms from continuing BIM use and software vendors from promoting BIM applications.

Inconsistent Standards. Standards issues can be divided into three categories:

  • First, there is inconsistency across upstream and downstream industries within the construction sector. Aligning standards starting from owners and design institutes is crucial for compelling construction companies to adopt BIM, ultimately yielding greater efficiency.
  • Second, variations in budget cost coding among provinces, along with discrepancies between automatically generated specifications and units and the enterprise-specific control requirements, prevent BIM’s widespread adoption.
  • Third, mismatches between BIM data standards and those used in ERP systems limit BIM’s potential to deliver value.

These points represent the biggest challenges in BIM implementation, as identified by the BIM Building Training Network editor. We hope this resonates with everyone involved in the industry.
