This rectangular, north-facing plot lies within a cluster of family-style homes in an open neighborhood. Its only distinct boundary is the traditional ‘thinnai’—a raised, covered porch unique to Tamil households. This space serves as a communal area where family members and neighbors gather to chat and play with pets, embodying a strong sense of belonging.

The design arranges public areas—including the thinnai porch, living room, and courtyard—alongside more private kitchens and bedrooms in a linear sequence, creating strong visual connections between each space. At the heart of the home lies the courtyard, where a curved wall shields the west side from harsh sunlight.

On the east side, this curved wall extends up to the roof, creating an open area bathed in sunlight. Perforations in the curve cast playful light patterns on the ground and allow rainwater to filter into the courtyard. The river stones scattered throughout serve as meaningful reminders of nearby flowing rivers. This curve is more than a sculptural feature—it functions as a playful wall for climbing to the roof and a spot for lying back to watch drifting clouds. Connecting the ground and roof, it forms a three-dimensional leisure space.

The courtyard draws not only family members but also birds, insects, dogs, and cats, transforming the home into a sanctuary for all living creatures. Here, residents experience nature and the changing climate intimately—feeling cool, moist soil beneath bare feet, raindrops falling through the open roof, and gazing at stars under a clear sky. These moments breathe life and energy into the space.
