The use of BIM technology during the construction phase in China has evolved significantly—from simply performing clash detection to now enabling 4D-based project management. It is encouraging to see BIM technology becoming increasingly widespread and deeply integrated into construction processes.
So, what is the true value of BIM technology during construction? Today, the BIM Building Training Network editor will explore this question from three distinct levels.
At the most basic level, BIM serves as a tool. Computational software is used to create a three-dimensional model, allowing for rapid calculations. This approach greatly reduces issues such as overestimation, underestimation, and omissions in engineering projects, while also boosting the efficiency of budgeting personnel.
Moving up to the project level, the BIM model becomes a 6D linked database. Throughout the project lifecycle, information stored in the BIM model supports decision-making for workforce and equipment planning, as well as controlled material requisition by providing data access anytime, anywhere. It helps avoid rework through clash detection and allows for precise management of components like steel bars and carpentry samples. This refined project management can increase project profits by over 10%.
At the highest level, BIM is applied at the enterprise scale. It integrates all BIM models from the company’s projects onto a single server, creating a centralized platform to store vast amounts of engineering data. This setup enables the corporate headquarters to track, monitor, and analyze all projects in real time. Additionally, by analyzing historical project data, an enterprise quota library can be established to support future project bidding and management. Furthermore, BIM can be integrated with ERP systems, allowing direct data transfer from the BIM database. This eliminates the need for onsite personnel to manually enter large amounts of data, facilitates seamless data flow within ERP, and significantly enhances enterprise management capabilities.
