What BIM Really Means to Us

What does BIM mean to us? This is a question many people are currently pondering, with answers varying depending on whether one approaches it from a design or construction perspective. The editor of the BIM Architecture Training Network would like to share insights on the significance of BIM in our work and lives.

With BIM, designers can concentrate more on the design itself, eliminating the need to spend excessive time on creating 2D drawings. The line between 2D and 3D in BIM is increasingly blurred. BIM addresses the limitations of solid model design by integrating spatial sequences and visual models through advanced 3D digital technology. Designers can use virtual cameras to explore perspectives from different viewpoints, quickly generate animations, employ various drawing software for virtual simulations—such as mechanical models—and even simulate real construction processes. Ultimately, building an information model delivers a true three-dimensional representation of a building.

We categorize skinning design methods into two main approaches: first, performing two-dimensional layouts and elevation drawings using CAD software, followed by creating 3D models for rendering; second, directly designing the 3D form using modeling software and then producing 2D plans with CAD. However, both approaches have limitations. Designers often detach architectural space, focusing primarily on graphical representation and functionality. Architectural space is not merely a byproduct of plans and surfaces—it is a crucial design method for controlling building form and experience.

The development of BIM goes beyond simply upgrading existing technologies. It also reflects a transformation in production organization and management methods, profoundly influencing how people think and work. The BIM information revolution advances independently of personal preferences or traditional mindsets. It is set to reshape multiple facets of the construction industry, including design, construction, fabrication, sales, property management, and overall project delivery.

The above summary, provided by the BIM Building Training Network editor, aims to resonate with professionals and enthusiasts alike, highlighting the deep significance of BIM in our industry.
