A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started with BIM

The editor of the BIM Architecture Training Network has previously discussed how beginners can start with BIM, yet many students still have concerns about this topic. Therefore, it seems necessary to revisit this subject today.

BIM actually simplifies what used to seem complicated, allowing more people to intuitively understand the construction process and share building information. This, in turn, reduces most human errors. One of the most tangible benefits of BIM today is the visualization of elevations. This feature alone can significantly enhance construction efficiency. Keep in mind, not all builders are experts; many find it difficult to interpret flat drawings. Sometimes, even after looking for a long time, they struggle to visualize what the building truly looks like because a single flat surface doesn’t convey the three-dimensional form well. Having a 3D model makes this much easier—builders can simply follow the model.

Thus, the core purpose of BIM is clear: it’s about understanding what information we can extract from the model. Nowadays, many people mistakenly believe BIM is just a 3D model. However, a 3D model is only one type of information BIM provides. To grasp BIM fully, we need to ask two key questions: What information can we input into the model? And what information can we output to everyone? For example, a popular application today is pipeline integration (MEP), where relationship data between pipelines is input into the model. This allows software to adjust layouts, detect clashes, and then output the most efficient pipeline system for use in construction.

Therefore, starting with BIM or understanding it isn’t difficult, especially for those with architectural experience. The challenge lies in BIM’s role as an open platform, where it is not always clear what information should be included. This is a question the global industry continues to explore—how best to utilize BIM. Fortunately, many software options exist today, so you don’t need to be limited to just one. The key lies in the concept of “information.” Software is merely a tool; with time and practice, anyone can learn to use it. So, don’t assume that mastering a particular software alone equates to proficiency in BIM.
