How Is BIM Adoption Transforming Construction in China?

Many students are concerned about the promotion of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in China, as it directly impacts the future of enterprises and individuals alike. Today, BIM Building Training Network summarizes some of the key developments in BIM promotion across China from various sources. Everyone should take note of these trends.

1. Application of State-Supported BIM Research Results

Fundamental research on BIM technology in China has received strong government support and produced significant outcomes. For example, the “15th Five-Year Plan” Science and Technology Tackacking Program included projects such as the Building Engineering 4D Construction Management System based on IFC (Industry Foundation Classes). This system has been successfully applied to several large and complex projects including the National Stadium, Qingdao Bay Bridge, and Guangzhou West Tower. Experts consider it a domestic first, filling a gap in China’s capabilities while reaching an internationally advanced level.

China’s research emphasis has been on establishing a BIM system architecture based on IFC. As a result, a BIM modeling system, a BIM data integration management platform, and a BIM database for design and construction have been developed. Under the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” Technology Support Project, research on next-generation building engineering software based on BIM technology is underway. Soon, a range of application software will be launched covering building design, cost estimation, energy-saving design, construction optimization, safety analysis, and durability evaluation. These programs are already being demonstrated and applied in practical engineering, and their further promotion will significantly accelerate BIM adoption.

2. Development of Industry BIM Standards

IFC serves as the standard for data representation and exchange in BIM. During the “15th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s construction industry began promoting the use of IFC standards. In 2007, the industry released the standard titled “Digital Definition of Building Objects,” and the “Specification for Industrial Basic Platforms” is also nearing publication. The ongoing development of Chinese BIM standards forms a critical foundation and guarantee for widespread BIM implementation.

3. Growing Demand for IT Applications in Construction

China is currently undertaking the world’s largest infrastructure development, with engineering projects expanding in scale and complexity every day. The emergence of mega projects brings significant investment, technical, and management risks to enterprises. However, current management models and IT methods fall short of meeting the needs of modern construction.

The application of BIM technology fundamentally addresses information gaps that occur across different stages and disciplines throughout the building lifecycle. This has become an urgent need for construction companies aiming to enhance informatization and improve outcomes from design and construction technology to management.

Projects such as the National Stadium, Qingdao Bay Bridge, and Guangzhou West Tower have successfully implemented 4D construction dynamic integrated management through BIM. The Shanghai Center project’s EPC bidding explicitly requires BIM technology. Additionally, the Shanghai Financial Exchange Square and Guanglian Da Information Building have planned comprehensive BIM application strategies across the building lifecycle, incorporating BIM from the design phase.

The application and promotion of BIM in these large-scale projects have attracted strong attention from design and construction firms and are expected to serve as important demonstrations for BIM’s broad adoption in China’s construction industry.

In summary, both the government and enterprises are actively supporting BIM promotion. It is widely believed that BIM adoption will become mainstream in the near future.
