01 Project Analysis

The Guangming International Equestrian Center is situated on Guangming Street in the Guangming District of Shenzhen. It serves as the main venue for the dressage and obstacle course events of the 15th National Games equestrian competition. Notably, it is the only new venue constructed within the Shenzhen division for these games.

The project covers a land area of 50,018 square meters, with a total built-up area of 69,000 square meters. Its facilities include a main race track, indoor training hall, outdoor training ground, competition rooms, and horse stables. The center can accommodate up to 200 horses during competitions.

The eastern side of the site features a natural mountain with a significant elevation difference compared to the city road on the west. The design thoughtfully takes these site conditions into account by incorporating an elevated garage along the city road side. This raises the main activity area, minimizing excavation impacts on the natural mountain terrain.

02 Design Description

The main venue’s design is inspired by the concept of “a new wooden environment with shared multi-eaves views.” The structure primarily uses glued laminated timber, shaped to echo traditional Chinese sloping roofs. This approach retains the essence of classic roof trusses while presenting an unconventional volume. It forms a dense, diverging “purlin” system that embodies structural logic, blending traditional aesthetics with modern architectural expression.

The design emphasizes openness, encouraging user exploration and immersive experiences. It transforms traditional guided tours into active experiential viewing, satisfying the public’s interest in understanding and practicing equestrian culture. The layout forms courtyard-facing spaces that are integrated yet relatively independent, immersing visitors in the environment and evoking memories of Lingnan’s local culture.

The venue is interconnected on the first floor by several corridors of varying scale, dispersed across different levels. These corridors allow natural light, wind, and views to permeate the space, creating spontaneous encounters that enrich the cultural atmosphere. This multidimensional approach fosters a comprehensive experience, where architectural regional characteristics awaken emotions and convey cultural heritage, responding to contemporary cultural needs through traditional interpretations.

The architectural and structural design achieves transparency and seamless interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces. The continuous lightweight façade enhances regional cultural elements through soaring eaves, giving the large volume a sense of lightness and floating. This creates a transparent, interactive environment beneath the eaves—where mountains, wind, light, shadow, people, and horses coexist harmoniously with nature.
