The Ice Chrysanthemum Field Library is nestled within a vast ice chrysanthemum plantation at the base of Yuntai Mountain. The architect was commissioned to design a multifunctional facility that accommodates activities such as tasting iced chrysanthemum tea, reading, small musical performances, salon workshops, agricultural science education, and storage for agricultural equipment.

Architecture here resembles a village. To avoid overwhelming the flower field landscape with a single large structure, the architect divided the building’s functions into five small, scattered cubes. This approach not only prevents interference between different activities but also offers panoramic views of the landscape from every direction. These five interconnected, relatively private cubes can host various events simultaneously. Each unit adopts the traditional sloping mountain wall design typical of local village homes, with raised roofs facing the flower fields in different directions, composing a miniature village settlement.

The architecture and its surrounding environment are deeply intertwined. The building’s spaces serve as a series of frames that capture views of the flower fields, effectively turning the landscape into a living picture visible through the windows. At the same time, the sculptural architectural forms themselves become a striking part of the floral scenery.

The agricultural crops surrounding the building follow seasonal growth cycles, creating a dynamic environment that shifts throughout the year. The five individual cubes face east, west, north, and south, capturing the changing patterns of light throughout the day. This architectural arrangement allows visitors to experience time and seasons on the vast landscape.

The building itself is a connected hollow structure featuring a simple sculptural form painted in gray and white. Inside, a series of interconnected curved wooden spaces define the interior. Five circular wooden walls divide the five individual buildings into public and private, service and served areas. These walls are clad in local wood, whose warm tones and textures echo the delicate character of chrysanthemums. This spatial arrangement provides a versatile environment that balances solitude with opportunities for gatherings and social exchange.

The design creates an intriguing contrast between the building’s soft interior curves and its square exterior. This interplay transforms perceptions from day to night: in sunlight, the white mountain walls cast strong shadows reminiscent of northern settlements; at night, the building’s contours fade, emphasizing the warm, flexible spaces inside and evoking a dreamlike atmosphere.
