Luzhen is a small hill that offers a panoramic view of the entire Lushan community. This suburban neighborhood, with a history spanning over two thousand years, showcases a distinctive architectural style reflective of its era. Inspired by Tuscany, known as Italy’s most beautiful region, the town is thoughtfully designed to evoke the charm of a quaint, easily accessible small town.

At the summit, visitors are rewarded with a square that features three key buildings: a club, a church, and the Lushan A4 Art Museum. This area serves as a cultural hub, and the renovation of Lushan Town focuses heavily on revitalizing the Art Museum. The museum aims to reflect the vibrant and positive community culture of Lushan through a fresh yet respectful approach.

The Art Museum encompasses approximately 5,000 square meters of exhibition space. To harmonize with the town’s scale, the original structure was designed with three floors above ground and two underground. The renovation approach is straightforward—continuing the existing architectural logic—yet challenging, as it requires balancing new elements and functions with the old buildings and their surroundings.
Although the additions are modest, they are distinctly modern, crafted with steel plates to create lightweight structures with sharp lines. This design choice creates a striking contrast against the community’s prevalent stone and roughly painted buildings.

Our goal for the renovation is to be both respectful and authentic. We carefully preserve the existing buildings and select construction methods that meet contemporary needs. Changes to the original facade are minimized while expanding the area thoughtfully, optimizing the exhibition flow, and addressing challenges posed by the building’s multi-story layout.

Rather than imposing deliberate symbols or messages, we focus on creating small architectural interventions that clearly reflect their respective eras. This neutral modernity extends inside, where simple volumes enhance functionality, restoring fluidity and practicality to accommodate future, diverse exhibitions.
