BIM Technology is not omnipotent, but its application possibilities and value are virtually limitless. How do you perceive the current development status of BIM technology in China? The editor of BIM Architecture Training Network offers the following three objective observations.
First, when considering the overall development of BIM technology, it is still in its early stages. Although domestic software like Luban Software has been dedicated to BIM development for over 15 years, the integration and maturity of BIM are still in the early phases. Currently, there are more than 100 BIM solution applications across various construction disciplines in China. However, many areas remain undeveloped, and significant room for improvement exists within the current applications.
Second, existing BIM technology has already generated immense value for enterprises, delivering returns on investment that are several times higher. While BIM cannot accomplish everything yet, it is capable of many important functions, and the value it creates is substantial. Construction companies should not wait for BIM technology to be perfect before adopting it. Similarly, they don’t need to wait until BIM-based designs are fully optimized before moving forward. Projects that have implemented BIM have already realized considerable benefits, with investment returns of 5 to 10 times being entirely achievable. The advancement and refinement of BIM technology will be a long-term journey, but this should not prevent companies from leveraging BIM today to generate significant value.
Third, BIM technology is destined to become a revolutionary force for productivity in the construction industry. Construction companies that fail to adopt and deeply integrate BIM technology in a timely manner risk losing their competitiveness and even survival. For thousands of years, 2D construction technology has dominated, and project management models have seen little fundamental change. Although information technologies like OA and ERP have provided some improvements in recent years, they have not fundamentally transformed the industry. BIM upgrades construction technology from 2D to 3D, representing a revolutionary one-dimensional leap forward.
From this perspective, the development of BIM technology in China is promising, yet there remains a long path ahead. It is believed that once the country’s BIM standards are officially launched, China’s BIM development will enter a phase of explosive growth.
