Located just north of Longgang Avenue in Longgang District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, Huanglongpo Nine Year Integrated School is approximately 400 meters northeast of Longcheng Square Subway Station, offering excellent transportation accessibility. This educational facility supports the Longgang Street community and is planned to accommodate 72 classes across nine years of integrated schooling. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2023, with the school expected to open in 2024.

The project covers a total land area of 31,160.5 square meters, split into two plots — east and west — separated by Daxing Road. The design divides these plots into two teaching zones: the western plot serves as the junior high school area (including some primary school facilities), while the eastern plot is dedicated to primary school education. Adjacent to the site’s right side are an urban park under construction and the Lingnan Cultural Ancestral Hall. To foster diverse learning experiences, the educational facilities are designed to continually evolve.

For students, school is more than just a place to learn; it also provides a sense of security, participation, and belonging. Inspired by the Lingnan Ancestral Hall located on site, the design introduces a “knowledge courtyard”—an open yet enclosed space closely connected to nature. The campus aims to offer diverse learning environments that integrate site features and natural elements, adapting to the evolving educational needs of the future to boost student engagement.

To address the separation between the primary and junior high school sections, seven enclosed courtyards with distinct educational themes will be incorporated throughout the site. To strengthen the connection with the community park on the east side, the east and west plots will be linked by a cultural corridor, forming a cohesive cultural axis. This corridor, approximately 230 meters long, is a defining feature of Huanglongpo School.
The corridor facilitates easy movement between campuses for teachers and students and includes four key nodes from west to east: a three-story cultural axis lobby, a teaching interaction corridor designed for children’s socializing and relaxation during breaks, an art bridge serving as an exhibition hall, and a park interaction corner integrating the community park. Together, the seven knowledge courtyards—dedicated to learning, exploration, reading, activities, childlike play, and etiquette—are interconnected by this corridor, forming a “cultural grand garden.”

Green spaces are woven throughout the school’s inner courtyards, providing students with opportunities to learn, play, and explore in natural surroundings. This diverse spatial experience helps unlock students’ potential, fostering innovation and practical skills that meet the demands of future society. The sports area, located on the west side of the junior high campus, features an 11-meter high double-decker sports playground. The elevated first floor includes multifunctional courts for basketball, badminton, and swimming. The V-shaped sports field and teaching facilities create a distinctive campus landmark with clean, simple lines.

The eastern plot primarily serves the primary school teaching areas, with main buildings oriented north-south to maximize natural light. These buildings are positioned close to the park’s green space on the east side, with open courtyards facing the park to bring greenery into the campus along the cultural axis. The main pedestrian entrance for the elementary school is located on the west side of the east plot, ensuring safe access for students nearby.

Our goal is to break away from traditional campus layouts by creating a variety of engaging courtyards. This transforms the school into a cultural space that harmoniously coexists with nature and reflects Lingnan culture, providing children with inspiring environments to learn, explore, read, and participate in activities while experiencing the beauty of nature and culture.
