The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) campus, spanning 267 acres, officially opened in September this year. The project took three years from planning and design to completion. This brand-new carbon-neutral green research and education campus offers students and faculty an inspiring environment for living, working, researching, and learning. It sets a global benchmark for the future of higher education campuses in China.

The KPF design integrates HKUST’s construction goals with the natural beauty of the site and its innovative surroundings. This approach creates an innovative campus that fosters the joint development of academic and research projects while prioritizing carbon neutrality and zero water waste.

KPF Executive Director Jill Lerner commented, “During the intense two-year construction phase, KPF collaborated closely with HKUST’s leadership and faculty to deliver a cutting-edge, research-focused campus. The campus is divided into seven distinct zones, each offering unique experiences in teaching, research, living, sports, entertainment, and social interaction for HKUST’s community.”

The overall planning and design establish an iconic and memorable environment for the Guangzhou campus. The first phase covers nearly 6 million square feet (about 550,000 square meters), accommodating over 4,000 graduate students and 400 faculty and staff. Upon full completion, the campus will support more than 10,000 students and faculty, creating a fully integrated community that combines academic facilities with dormitories, neighborhood spaces, campus retail and student amenities, administrative offices, hotels, incubation spaces, and sports facilities.

The campus features multiple neighborhood zones, each designed with distinct characteristics tailored to specific functions and architectural styles.

KPF President James von Klemperer stated, “Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, our team remained fully engaged, helping bring this extraordinary campus to life. Our offices in New York, Hong Kong, and Shanghai are dedicated to fulfilling HKUST’s vision of a world-class scientific learning and research institution. Our architectural design emphasizes collaboration, blending functionality and efficiency with the local landscape. Together, the campus’s architecture and landscape create a vibrant atmosphere that energizes researchers and inspires innovation.”

All campus facilities, designed by KPF, are arranged around a vibrant central hub that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and fosters community. This teaching and learning center forms the heart of HKUST (Guangzhou), with living, learning, and research environments radiating outward.

Eight research and laboratory buildings are interconnected by covered arcades, creating an impressive urban space that links campus expansion along the east-west and north-south axes. These buildings connect diverse campus functions and provide key pathways to the city and adjacent rivers.

The campus embraces a “project-based learning” approach rather than traditional academic divisions by school or discipline. This model promotes interdisciplinary interaction through four major hubs focused on functions, systems, information, and society, alongside architecture that supports cutting-edge thematic research.

The integrated teaching and research spaces include seminar rooms, laboratories, large lecture halls, maker spaces, and collaborative office areas.

This development includes nearly 1 million square feet (over 90,000 square meters) of research facilities dedicated to robotics and autonomous systems, intelligent manufacturing and transportation, microelectronics, and atmospheric and oceanic sciences.

HKUST (Guangzhou) serves as a model of sustainable development in China, targeting a 54% reduction in carbon emissions from day one and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The project incorporates environmental protection and flexible design strategies tailored to Guangzhou’s hot, humid climate, rapid urbanization, and regional challenges such as flooding, earthquakes, and climate change.

The campus’s core design principles focus on zero environmental impact, resilience, future-readiness, social welfare, regenerative systems, and living laboratories. The overall plan addresses these goals across five key aspects: energy, water, resources, mobility, and comfort.

HKUST (Guangzhou) is a flagship project within the Nansha New Innovation Zone, situated between Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Positioned adjacent to Shenzhen, China’s “Silicon Valley,” it serves as an innovation-driven hub within the Greater Bay Area. A high-speed rail line connects this campus with the main HKUST campus in Hong Kong, fostering synergy between the two institutions.

A team of over 70 architects and planners from KPF’s offices in New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore, along with other consultants, demonstrated exceptional flexibility and collaboration in designing and delivering this large-scale project rapidly.

Arup led integrated engineering services, covering civil, geotechnical, structural, mechanical and electrical, curtain wall, fire protection, smart building technology, and sustainability design, enabling efficient campus delivery. Other consultants included Ayers Saint Gross, Jacobs, James Corner Field Operations, and MVA.

The master planning began in July 2019 and reached a preferred design option by January 2020, allowing construction to commence in September 2019. HKUST (Guangzhou) is a key part of KPF’s global portfolio of research, innovation, and educational facilities, which also includes the Advanced Science Research Center at City University of New York, Detroit Innovation Center at the University of Michigan, and NYU Shanghai’s New Front Beach Campus.
